MV princess, hundreds feared dead

Capsized ferry, June 22
MANILA, Philippines (June 23) - Roiling seas stalled efforts Monday to get inside a ferry that capsized during a deadly typhoon while survivors recalled drifting at sea for more than 24 hours, first in a raft and then in life jackets. The MV Princess of Stars passenger ferry capsized Saturday during a typhoon that hit the Philippines. More than 800 people were on board, and hundreds may have died after being trapped in the vessel. Only 38 survivors have been found. Above, the ship is seen submerged Sunday.

Rescuers were considering boring a hole into the ship in an attempt to find survivors Monday. But members of the Coast guard reached the ship got no response when they rapped on the hull with metal instruments.

Huge storm hits the Philippines. "They're scouring the area. They're studying the direction of the waves to determine where survivors may have drifted," said coast guard spokesman Lt.
